Westfield Garden City Redevelopment
Following on from ALLROADS successful involvement in demolition and external works associated with the Carindale Shopping Centre redevelopment, Westfield engaged ALLROADS to undertake significant civil infrastructure works as part of its $400 million Garden City Shopping Centre Redevelopment project.
The project saw ALLROADS awarded 2 separate contracts totalling more than $8.0million and included:
• Contract 1 – Full construction and realignment of Link St West,
• Contract 2 – Bulk earthworks, detailed excavation and re-diversion of an existing 1350mm diameter trunk roofwater diversion.
Specific works undertaken across both contracts included: construction of 7m high reinforced earth retaining wall, construction of 2.7m high reinforced concrete parapet on a 3.5m wide cantilever foundation, bulk earthworks, stormwater, trunk sewer, trunk water main, soil nailing and shotcreting, new signalised intersection, asphalt and linemarking and hard and soft landscaping.
Construction of the retaining wall posed a number of challenges including poor subgrade conditions for footings, close proximity to existing buildings and construction on a curved alignment. However, through modification to existing design and tight monitoring and control, the wall was constructed on schedule on to the required specifications.
Works also required detailed programming and meticulous execution to ensure Westfield’s 14 week handover was achieved. This saw ALLROADS implement an accelerated construction program, including 9 weeks of night-works, and adopt an open and efficient communication strategy to ensure clear lines of reporting and control between both the client and other subcontractors and suppliers.
Construction of 600m2 reinforced earth retaining wall on curved alignment
3,500m3 reinforced earth soil block
80,000m3 of bulk earthworks
Construction of 2.7m high reinforced concrete parapet on a 3.5m wide cantilever foundation
Removal of 1,500m3 of uncontrolled fill
Trunk Sewer up to 6m in depth
Roadworks included new signalised intersection, road lighting, deep lift asphalt pavements and linemarking and hard and soft landscaping
Project required accelerated programming including significant night works and detailed communication strategies.
