Westfield completed a $300 million redevelopment of the Carindale Shopping Centre; adding approximately 22,000sqm of additional retail space.
Early works for the redevelopment included the demolition of the existing Hotel Carindale and Town Square Sites and subsequent external works to prepare the demolished space for future construction.
These early works saw ALLROADS awarded 4 separate contracts totalling more than $5.6million and included:
• Contract 1 – Construct new waste compactor area,
• Contract 2 – Construction of HV reticulation & pits,
• Contract 3 – Bulk Earthworks excavation in rock,
• Contract 4 – External Roadworks.
The project presented a number of challenges, in particular concerning the Contract 3 and Contract 4 works. As it was a hard rock site (Brisbane Tuff Rock), stringent vibration controls were required during the drill and blast to ensure the structural stability of the existing Shopping Centre and adjacent retirement village and residential apartment complex were not compromised.
When undertaking Contract 4 works detailed programming (including night works) and high level of community liaison was required to ensure works did not interfere with customer and surrounding residential access nor the operation of the major Brisbane City Council Bus Transit Centre that is based at Carindale.
55,000 m3 Bulk Earthworks basement excavation
Included drill and blast in hard rock
Required Interface with both demolition contractor & foundation contractor to fast-track project
Roadworks included road lighting, 300 dia watermain and deep lift asphalt pavements
Project included significant community liaison to ensure works did not interfere with vital Brisbane Transport Network services.
