MDS Rail & Train Loading Project & Intersection Upgrade

The Meteor Downs South (MDS) Mine is a relatively new open cut coal mining operation located in the lower Bowen Basin region 45km south of the township of Springsure.

At the end of 2019, ALLROADS were awarded the contract to complete two packages of works; the first being site civil works including new roads and train loading facility, and the second being civil works associated with the construction of the Rail Loop.

The Site Civil works package included:

  • The construction and/or upgrade of two DTMR Intersections on the Dawson Highway,

  • Site access road  and industrial area construction, including the offsite carpark,

  • Construction of a TLO product stockpile pad (350m x 150m) and a smaller hardstand area for train loading operation facilities,

  • Construction of a stormwater retention basin / sediment dam (32ML).

The Rail Loop Civil Works package included:

  • Rail formation works including earthworks, capping layer, stormwater drainage, level crossings, revegetation, signage, and fencing,

  • Connection of the rail loop formation to the existing Bauhinia Rail System.

In delivering the works the ALLROADS team encountered a significant challenge in the form of a large amount of rock through the largest cutting on site. The cutting was up to 3.5m deep in sections, with rock being encountered through the first 1m of cut. To counteract this ALLROADS was able to draw upon our internal plant and equipment resourcing and mobilise quickly to site a D11 Dozer to undertake ripping and pushing of the rock. This saved both ALLROADS and the client a large amount of time and money in comparison to other proposed options (e.g. Drill & Blast).

Providing further time savings, ALLROADS worked with the client and Rail Authority to achieve accelerated completed separable portions to allow the early handover of embankment areas for the Rail Track construction. Our continual hitting of required targets and timeframes, allowed the track construction to continually flow and enabled the client to facilitate their train bookings for coal loading out.

  • Total Earthworks operation in excess of 100,000m3 of material moved

  • 5,000m2 of In-Situ Cement Stabilised Pavement

  • 30,000m3 of cut to fill on site civils (most from Sediment dam)

  • Clay lining of sediment dam 2,000m3

  • 35,000m3 cut to fill on rail loop

  • 31,000m3 cut to spoil on rail loop

  • 7,000m3 unsuitable from rail loop

  • 8,400m3 capping layer base imported and placed on rail embankment

  • 9 x CSP culvert structures on rail loop 900mm to 1200mm

  • 18,000m3 of manufactured base material placed on Access Rd & Product Pad
