Constructive Thinking Experts

Following the upgrade of our Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads prequalification to R3/B2/F50, ALLROADS were awarded a significant safety barrier upgrade project along the Bruce Highway around North Lakes, north of Brisbane.

Working from the Pine River Bridge north to Anzac Avenue, the contract has seen ALLROADS undertake shoulder widening, paving, surfacing and installation of a wire rope safety barrier along the centre median strip.  The project placed 4,000m3 of imported fill, 10,000t of pavement materials, installed 8,000m of wire barrier and guardrail, and 61,000m2 of prime and seal.

As would be expected when works are occurring on one of Australia’s busiest National Highways; detailed planning and a well-executed construction program were critical, with the ALLROADS crew only having a six hour nightly window to undertake the works. To further add to the complexity of the project, all machinery had to be floated in and out each night.

Managing the speeds of the 1,500 cars/hour that travelled through the site was another challenging aspect of the project. The construction team implemented innovative measures to ensure motorists maintained the signed speed limits including the use of speed radar trailers, which displayed the motorists’ actual speeds and advised them to slow down where necessary. This proved to be the most effective measure; in turn creating a safer working environment for the ALLROADS work crew.

ALLROADS’ effective and innovative project and QHSE management approach saw the project completed on schedule.

  • Works were undertaken in accordance with the relevant TMR technical specifications and in line with the R2, F5 Prequalification requirements

  • Careful programming and strategic staging was integral in order to ensure a safe and trafficable site was maintained throughout the construction duration

  • Recycled Concrete Pavement Material (RM001) was used as an alternative material to Type 2.1 Gravel. The recycled material not only was providing a benefit to the environment, but also a saving to the principal

  • Developed in close consultation with DTMR to achieve an MUTCD compliant project during both working hours and non-working hours
